Specific details of the mentor program are outlined below:
Part 1: Making Vulnerability Powerful - Initial Mentor Workshop Activity(Implementation Lesson Plan Included)
Purpose: The purpose of this workshop activity is to provide directors/coordinators an inside look into what their students’ personal and academic struggles. The activity will reveal the barriers that threaten the academic and personal success of the students and provide students an opportunity to set goals and create a plan to overcome those barriers and offer themselves a healthier path to success.
This activity happens prior to the start of the mentoring program: Directors/Coordinators recruit students into programs. However, they don’t always know what students are dealing with or what barriers have presented themselves in that students life. This is where I come in!
The benefits of this workshop activity are outlined as follows:
Director’s will learn specifically what their students needs are instead of guessing.
Students will develop a plan for success they can utilize throughout the semester.
Director’s will gain insight into students weaknesses and strengths.
Students will learn to eliminate their struggles/barriers and move forward for success.

WHY AM I DOING THIS?
I remember what it was like attending a predominantly white institution as an African American!
I remember being a STEM major as a first-generation college student!
I remember not feeling prepared when I started college!
I remember the difficulty of getting acclimated academically, socially and mentally!
I remember being reminded of coming from a low-income, first-generation community and having to overcome imposter syndrome!
And because I REMEMBER, I haven’t forgotten to REACH BACK !!!
Let’s be honest: what matters most is what the students believe and say!!
TAke a look!
